How can we handle cylinders from storage safely?
Be aware of the contents of the cylinder and treat it appropriately. A familiarity with the properties and behaviour of the gas in the cylinder storage hold is a must.
When removing a cylinder from storage you must be able to positively identify the cyclinder. Cylinders in storage can often be mislabelled, this is a risk.
Always maintain an upright position for the cylinder as well as handle them carefully and respectfully. The cylinder valve and safety packing nuts must not be tampered with.
Never initiate an arc of electricity onto any cylinder. Ensure cylinder storage areas are free from naked sparks and flames. Use a soap solution to leak test all cylinders. Do note that asphyxiation can be caused by any gas in an enclosed storage area.
When a cylinder is removed from storage you must not attempt to refill the cylinder. When there is more than one component gas within the cylinder always classify the cylinder as containing the most dangerous gas. Cylinder Storage can be safe if you have an appropriate policy in place. Be safe.
